CHANNEL TRES WEEDMAN

Compton artist  Channel Tres uses silky jazz house, blended with gritty hip-hop grooves to create deep and sexy dance music. His 2019 5-track EP Black Moses is packed with beats that'll keep you on the dance floor, including the title-track (featuring JPEGMAFIA) which channels Pharrell vibes from his N.E.R.D era. Tres' new single 'Weedman' is about the stresses around trying get hold of your weedman, and at a deeper glance, brings to light the experience of black people in America at a time when weed is decriminalised, while the people who once sold it continue to be incarcerated. The music video was filmed on Super 8mm, film by regular collaborator Anthony Sylvester and features Channel Tres in a secluded 1970's style mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Despite tackling deep issues in the track, 'Weedman' is nonetheless a comic and bouncy party tune, thanks to the grimy beat and bulging sub bass. Channel Tres' vocal is blasé and smooth, whilst a crowd of soulful voices accompany on the hook "I’m going to the Weedman’s spot". Channel Tres tells us his current plans: “I’m working on a project right now and I guess just trying to get through 2020. I’m writing new music and this is the intro to the new grooves and what I’m doing vocally.” For the meanwhile, check out his new slice of funk. -Ellie Rose-Davies
